A channel in your niche posts a video and it takes off. Then they do it again. You open their channel and think, what do they know that I don't?

Here's the good news. It's almost never luck. It's a pattern. Once you know where to look, you can see it too, and use it to make your next video better. This guide shows you how.

Why your competition is your best teacher

Your viewers watch them too.

Your viewers don't only watch you. YouTube Studio even shows you which other channels they watch.

YouTube puts you side by side.

When your videos cover the same topic, YouTube often suggests them next to each other. That's your chance to win the click.

Their wins show what viewers want.

When a topic or format works for them, it tells you what your shared viewers are hungry for.

Always be upgrading

The channels that grow don't stay the same. They make each video a little better than the last one. Checking your competition once a month is how you know what better looks like.

Step 1

Find your real competitors

Your real competitors aren't the biggest channels in your niche. A channel with millions of subscribers plays a different game. Look for channels about your size, or a little bigger, that make videos for the same people you do.

Who to study Three rings around you: one step ahead (study first), your lane (study these), and the giants (skip for now). You THE GIANTS YOUR LANE ONE STEP AHEAD
One step aheadA little bigger than you and growing right now. You'll learn the most here.
Your laneSame topic, same kind of viewer. Study these every month.
The giantsMillions of subscribers. Fun to watch, hard to learn from. Skip them for now.

Two easy ways to find them

  1. Ask your own viewers. In YouTube Studio, open Analytics, click the Audience tab, and find the card called "Channels that your audience watches." Those channels were picked by your viewers.
  2. Search your topics. Search YouTube for the topics you cover. Write down the channels that keep showing up. Pick 2 or 3 that are close to your size.
Step 2

What to compare

Open their channel and sort their videos by Popular, then by Latest. Popular shows what worked over time. Latest shows what's working right now. Then look at these six things.

01

How often they post

Once a week? Twice? The same day every week?

02

Video length

Do their best videos run 8 minutes or 20? Long form, Shorts, or both?

03

Titles

Which words keep showing up in their top titles?

04

Thumbnails

Faces or no faces? Big text or none? How many colors?

05

The first 30 seconds

How fast do they get to the good part?

06

Breakout videos

Which videos did way better than the rest? What do they have in common?

Step 3

Spot your content gaps

A content gap is a topic that worked for them that you haven't made yet. Write down their 10 best videos from the past year. Next to each one, ask: have I made this? Every no is a gap.

Where your gaps are Two circles: topics that worked for them, and topics you've made. The part only they have made is your gap. Start there. Worked for them You've made YOUR GAPS Start here. You both cover it Only you
Start with the topics that worked for them and aren't on your channel yet.

Don't copy their video. Make your version, with your story, your voice and your take. That's how you win the viewers you share.

Step 4

Benchmark your channel in 15 minutes

Fill this in for you and two rivals. Do it once a month and watch which rows change.

FAQ

What is YouTube competitor analysis?
It means looking at other channels in your niche to see what's working for them, then using what you learn to make your own videos better. You compare things like how often they post, their titles, their thumbnails, and which videos took off.
How do I find my YouTube competitors?
Start in YouTube Studio. Open Analytics, click the Audience tab, and look at the card called Channels that your audience watches. Then search YouTube for the topics you cover and note who keeps showing up. Pick 2 or 3 channels about your size, or a little bigger.

Once a month is plenty for most creators. If you post Shorts every day, a quick look once a week helps you catch what's working faster.
